The Future Of Learning

Breaking  barriers to lifelong learning

Immersive Learning

Greatly enhanced assessment, recording, and reporting of learners' individual performance through credible credentials are now available for learning ecosystems. ADL's NILE (Navigator for Integrated Learning Experience) represents performance across a wide array of knowledge, skills, and attributes as competencies and leverages competency frameworks within the Total Learning Architecture (TLA). This technology is delivering unprecedented learning opportunities in and out of the classroom or work environment and connecting learning ecosystems everywhere. A symphony of unlimited learning moments will inspire and inform us whenever and wherever we are. In the classroom or group training program, all learners may be working toward a similar goal, but the instructor, technology and the curricula will meet each learner where they are and independently navigate them to the learning destination. Outside the classroom, technology will reinforce and expand learning. For example, Mandi's cell phone knows she's studying the geopolitics of the oil industry. As she fills up her car at a gas station, it pings to show her the largest oil-producing countries in the world, followed by countries with the largest known oil reserves. Similarly, Leon is learning about extremist groups in the Middle East. One group has just claimed responsibility for a bombing in Jordan. His device delivers him recent publications about this particular group and its history. These lifelong learning moments inside and outside of the classroom and work environment will be made possible with the metadata collected by NILE.

NILE - Navigator for Integrated Learning Experience

The Learning Experience: NILE is a research-backed tool providing a GPS-like experience to support life-long learning from K12 to higher education, skills and professional development, and independent learning.
For Learners: The more a learner uses or interacts with NILE, the more precisely it can characterize them, such as their learning preferences. NILE locates a learner's current knowledge, skills, and mindsets in any course or skills training program and navigates them to their learning goals. Highly curated activities are selected for each learner from a full-spectrum of learning resources, such as digital activities and offline rubric graded projects and experiential opportunities. The activities are selected by NILE using AI techniques based on data collected after each learning activity.
For Instructors: NILE provides a single interface for instructors to teach and monitor their cohorts. It provides vital reports to better understand their learners, including tracking competencies gained and areas of struggle, showing time-on-task for each learner, or their progress over time, and more. NILE also has an easy to use lesson planning component and editor where instructors can upload their lessons, or select courses, lessons, and activities from NILE’s extensive catalog of curated content to use with their cohorts.

NILE for Mission Control

The Administrative Experience: NILE for Mission Control allows all stakeholders access to essential learning metrics to allow data-informed decision making. Each stakeholder can only access data from Mission Control based on their assigned privileges:

Education and corporate-training administrators can review real-time data about the learning outcomes of their cohorts.

Content or curricular providers can inspect the coverage and efficacy of the learning activities, and NILE's AI-suggested activities for learners.

Learning researchers from a variety of fields and interests also use NILE to access anonymized, aggregated data from NILE users to further their research. They can develop and test their curricular interventions across education and skills, implement algorithms for reinforcement learning, or validate their hypotheses about learner mindsets.

  • The Navigated Learning Collaborative (NLC)... Focuses on tangible outcomes

  • Shares aligned beliefs and a singular objective: to ensure every partner achieves their individual agenda

  • Engages and inspires the community by sharing successes and open-source their expertise

  • Supports a coalition of caring, demonstrating optimism and activism for education

  • Values collective accomplishments over individual successes

  • Practices collective vigilance and shared measurement

Interoperable Learning Exchange

NILE is designed to integrate with different learning applications and systems for seamless information exchange. This makes all of the digital content from different platforms, tools, and resources used by learners, instructors and administrators work well together. All learning stakeholders get one-click access to all their learning, management and data resources based on their assigned privileges. This frees up valuable time and resources managing siloed learning and management systems to spend on learning, teaching and monitoring outcomes.

Aside from NILE's powerful applications, its ability to integrate and work well with other learning systems is why a growing number of users worldwide are adopting NILE, including more than three million K12 and skills and professional training in the U.S. and India. Implementations are also underway for English language training in Thailand and Europe, professional development in South Africa, skills training in Morocco, and civil service training in India.

xAPI Competency Model

NILE’s xAPI for Managers Course follows the xAPI competency model. It begins with foundational topics on Experience API, such as the Learning Record Store (LRS), activity stream data, and how to build a learner profile. The second part of the course focuses on managers, procurement managers, and project managers and how they can incorporate xAPI concepts in their operations and development strategies. On entering the course, learners first take a diagnostic to determine their initial location and can then study collections, formative assessments, and offline rubric graded activities throughout the manager domains.

As learners engage in a variety of offline and digital activities across distributed environments, data from these diverse activities systems are logged as xAPI statements into Learning Record Stores (LRSs). The different physical LRSs are compiled into queried data as one logical LRS. NILE uses big-data from a logical LRS to curate learning activities using AI techniques. Beyond standard metadata such as title, description and thumbnail, it computes transcript, summary, phrase cloud, concept, learner abilities, relevance, engagement, efficacy and exposition style.

"I use technology in my classroom, and I’ve seen many different platforms. The Learning Exchange lets me pull together a variety of resources and track student progress all in one place. I especially like the ability to see student time on task and that students can easily access resources to review concepts independently."

Laurie Ellis, Math Teacher, Leadership Public Schools

"It is really cool to see how engaged students are. I'm finally able to address their needs, and I can focus not just on filling skill gaps, but on teaching them how to learn."

Sophie Thomas, 9th-Grade Math Teacher
Leadership Public Schools

"The Learning Exchange allows my students to take agency of their learning. I walk around and facilitate learning. My students are engaged and can work at their own pace, in small groups or with the whole class."

Ms. Smith , 7th & 8th-Grade Social Science Teacher
Riverside Unified School District

“The Learning Exchange was easy to use and kept track of my progress. I was able to stay up with the class and even move ahead in Algebra 1, and I also realized I could teach myself new math skills."

Alondra, 9th-Grade Math Student
Leadership Public School

"The potential the Learning Exchange brings to a country like India is incredible. The focus on competency based learning provides a level playing field to all children across the spectrum."

Pallavi Mukhedkar, Education Team Lead
Gyan Prakash Foundation, India
